Orthodontic Emergencies While Traveling: What to Do When the Unexpected Happens

🧳 Orthodontic Emergencies While Traveling: What to Do When the Unexpected Happens

Vacations are meant for fun and relaxation—but orthodontic issues can pop up when you least expect them. Whether you're at the beach or halfway across the country, a broken bracket or misplaced aligners doesn't have to derail your trip. At Dominion Orthodontics, we’ve got you covered with tips on what to do if an orthodontic emergency happens while you’re away from home.

What to Do if a Bracket Breaks on Vacation

A broken bracket is one of the most common orthodontic issues—and while it's not usually a major emergency, it can be uncomfortable.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Apply orthodontic wax – If the bracket is rubbing or poking your cheek or gums, use orthodontic wax to cover it and reduce irritation.

  2. Avoid sticky or hard foods – Don’t eat anything that could make it worse, like popcorn, nuts, or chewy candy.

  3. Leave it in place – If the bracket is still attached to the wire, it’s best to leave it alone until you can return home.

  4. Call us when you're back – A loose bracket won’t usually affect your progress if it's addressed within a few days. Just let us know, and we’ll schedule a quick repair.

🚨 When to call right away:
If the wire is poking painfully, or if the bracket has come completely off and is causing discomfort, give us a call. We may be able to walk you through a quick fix—or help you find an office nearby if you’re out of town for an extended stay.

What to Do If You Lose Your Aligners

Losing an aligner tray during vacation happens more than you’d think—especially if you take it out during meals or by the pool. Here's what to do:

  1. Go back to your previous set – If you’ve recently switched to a new tray and lose it, wear your last set to prevent teeth from shifting.

  2. Don’t jump ahead – Avoid switching to your next set early unless we tell you to. Each aligner needs to be worn in the right order and for the right amount of time.

  3. Contact us ASAP – Call or email Dominion Orthodontics. We may be able to order a replacement tray to be sent directly to your location—or guide you on what to do until you return.

💡 Pro Tip: Always pack your previous and next aligner set when you travel, just in case.

When to Call vs. Wait Until You're Home

Not every orthodontic issue is an emergency, but here’s a quick guide:

Call Immediately
Painful wire poking
Lost or cracked aligners
Aligners lost mid-treatment
Brackets or wires causing cuts

Wait Until You’re Home
Loose bracket with no discomfort
Minor irritation from rubbing brackets
Aligner case or wax forgotten
Slight soreness or tightness

Enjoy Your Trip, Stress-Free

The best way to handle an orthodontic emergency while traveling is to be prepared and know what to do. Most issues can be managed temporarily until you’re back home, and we’re always just a phone call away.
